Light bulb

Invention by Thomas Edison

On 30 December 1880, a building was illuminated by light bulbs for the first time in the Netherlands: ‘The day before yesterday, a test was held of the electric lighting at the National Telegraph Office in Amsterdam. The overall effect was beautiful, and the lighting is distinguished by its pleasant and constant light and the absence of the heat which is such an annoying aspect of gas lighting.’

The success was copied: electric street lamps were installed on Kalverstraat on 1 February 1881, and the Lower Chamber was connected to the electricity mains in November 1889. The Philips family produced the light bulbs at a small factory in Eindhoven which developed into a multinational in the space of a few decades.
