Rembrandt’s quill

Art and literacy in the seventeenth-century

The Netherlands had the highest level of literacy in seventeenth-century Europe. Goose or swan feathers were used for writing. The most popular author was the poet and humorist Jacob Cats: 25% of citizens had one of his books at home.

Art also hung on the walls of virtually every household. One of the most successful painters was Rembrandt van Rijn. He was born in Leiden on 15 July 1606 and developed into a sought-after portrait-painter in Amsterdam. He died in 1669 and is buried in Amsterdam’s Westerkerk.
