Sharks’ teeth
Large sharks at the Dutch coast
Oceans, seas and land change shape and position. 550 million years ago, the North Sea Basin was where Brazil is now. It slowly began its journey to the northwest. For a long time, large sharks swam off our coasts.
But 10,000 years ago the Basin dried up. You could walk from the Netherlands to England, and the Thames was a tributary of the Rhine. Mammoths roamed: their bones and molars are still regularly pulled out of the sea. And on the beach at the Zeeland resort of Cadzand you can find sharks’ teeth.
