Cheese slicer
A symbol of Dutch thriftiness
With a cheese slicer you can cut nice thin slices of real Dutch Gouda or Edam cheese. This means you can use a little cheese to make a lot of sandwiches, and the cheese slicer is thus a symbol of Dutch thriftiness.
But if you thought that the cheese slicer was originally a Dutch implement, you would be wrong. The Norwegian carpenter Thor Bjørklund invented it in 1925. It arrived in the Netherlands a few years later, and was immediately a great success. The cheese slicer is now an indispensable item in our kitchens.
